Industry Insights
The market delivered its clearest signal this month: Robinhood is launching a new fund that lets retail investors buy into YC startups. The move completes a cycle that began in the aftermath of the 2022 bear market, when a large cohort of emerging managers built entire strategies around chasing YC companies regardless of traction or price.
The logic was understandable. After a brutal bear market, restricting the portfolio to startups that had already cleared the world’s most selective accelerator felt like a prudent way to reduce risk. I watched the approach proliferate among peers in my 2023 VC Lab program (and beyond).
YC’s historical track record is exceptional. Yet the program’s expansion into cohorts of several hundred companies each year created a predictable result: a flood of capital competing for the same names, valuations that steadily inflated, and any original edge competed away until returns began reverting to the mean.
What arrives now is the familiar final chapter: access products aimed at retail rarely improve underlying economics. Instead, they layer fees onto an already crowded trade and present it as democratization. We’ve seen this pattern before, including tokenized private investments in 2021, SPACs in 2019, ICOs in 2017, and packaged mortgage securities in 2008. In each case, creative intermediaries extracted value while buyers absorbed the risk they least understood.
The durable lesson for those who still underwrite rather than follow brand names remains straightforward: Conviction matters. Terms matter. Entry price matters. When capital concentrates into the same filtered set of companies at elevated prices, any residual alpha gets competed away, and ROI reverts to the mean. The managers who continue to generate excess returns will be those willing to look past co-investor logos and underwrite the business itself.
