Industry Insights

I spent the better part of last month doing what half of Silicon Valley seems to be doing right now: setting up my own OpenClaw instance. And I'll admit—the experience fundamentally shifted how I think about where we are in the AI adoption curve.

OpenClaw isn't just another productivity tool making the rounds on X. It's the first AI assistant I've tested that actually initiates contact with me—morning briefings via WhatsApp, proactive calendar nudges, email summaries before I ask. That behavioral inversion matters more than the technical specs. My ClawdBot drafts emails, books meetings, and runs terminal commands without me having to open an app. It remembers context from weeks ago. The "heartbeat" check-ins make it feel less like software and more like having a chief-of-staff who actually knows my preferences.

However, this was all a test (not a full implementation). Here's what keeps me from going all-in: the security architecture. Deep system access plus autonomy plus self-hosted infrastructure equals meaningful enterprise risk. I'm watching closely to see who productizes this experience with institutional-grade safeguards—and my money's on Google embedding this functionality into Workspace within the next 18 months, effectively turning OpenClaw's innovation into table stakes.

For our portfolio, this validates a core thesis: horizontal AI productivity plays are a race against big tech's integration timelines. For startups, the defensible opportunities live in vertical-specific agents where data and domain expertise create a real moat. If you're building in this space, the question isn't whether your product works—it's whether you can own a category before it gets absorbed into someone's suite.

In any case, it's the most exciting time in history to be an AI consumer. Enjoy the ride!
